The Co-op partners with the Schuylkill Environmental Education Center

By Morgan Pitts 11/12/2018

This November, The Energy Co-op is proud to partner with The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. Located in northwest Philadelphia, The Schuylkill Center was one of the first environmental education centers in the US. The organization’s four program areas: environmental education, environmental art, land stewardship, and wildlife rehabilitation help people of all ages deepen their understanding of and appreciation for the environment.

At the Co-op, sustainability is at the core of our mission. Confronting big challenges like climate change and making the shift to cleaner sources of energy will require the work of an engaged and informed public. The Schuylkill Center does the critical work of connecting people to nature and providing environmental education programming. Without programs such as these, confronting large environmental problems would be nearly impossible. Over the past year, the Center has engaged almost 10,000 people in public programs (including almost 7,000 school-aged children). In addition, the Center uses nature to help children stay healthy through partnerships with area hospitals and to provide mentorship to at-risk youth in Philadelphia.

Outside of its programs, the Center provides a place for everyone to reconnect with nature. Looking to get outside on a beautiful fall weekend? You may run into a Co-op staff member enjoying the three miles of hiking trails that traverse the Center’s 340 acre preserve complete with forests, fields, ponds and streams. And, if you’re passing by on the Schuylkill River Trail, there is now a connector that lets you take a detour to explore the Center’s grounds.

This November, The Energy Co-op is proud to support the Schuylkill Center’s efforts to connect Pennsylvanians with the natural world. For every new renewable electricity member who enters promo code “Schuylkill” during sign up this month, we will donate $50 to the center. Tell your friends today!
