That’s our mission. To achieve mission impact, we:
Enable our members to buy 100% clean energy as responsibly and affordably as possible.
Assist our members to use energy sensibly and efficiently.
Educate our members and our community to help them understand energy.
The Energy Co-op believes in educating our members and the public about renewable energy developments and changes in energy markets. We host periodic “Market Update” webinars to give members an overview of the current state of the renewable energy market in Pennsylvania. We also publish a range of content to help members navigate decisions about their energy needs.
To learn more about energy-related topics, check out our blog, The Current and our video series, In the News, discussing news and current events in the renewable energy industry.
The resources that powered the 20th century are limited and finite. Their supply is unsustainable in the long term, and their use has and continues to result in destructive environmental impacts.
The world is undertaking a historic transformation of our energy systems, transition to clean energy sources like wind and solar, among others.
The Energy Co-op is more than an energy supplier – we are a leader of today’s sustainable energy evolution. The Energy Co-op’s renewable electricity and renewable natural gas products provide Pennsylvania homes and business a simple and accessible alternative to fossil-fuel-based power. We have been innovating in the energy supply space since 1979 and will continue to meet member and energy consumer needs by offering novel solutions to energy challenges.
Our members and broader constituency form a community of like-minded individuals using their energy choice to effect a clean energy future and reduce carbon emissions.
Keep your energy dollars local, support our shared community, and use your choice to power the movement!
As a member-owned, nonprofit cooperative, we place our members at the forefront of everything we do. Our commitment to fostering an environment of trust, open communication and transparency is not simply a feature of our cooperative structure; it forms the fabric of the organization itself and is an essential element of our success. We strive to maintain a high level of accountability and integrity in all our interactions, allowing our members to make informed choices and actively participate in shaping the future of The Energy Co-op.
The Energy Co-op’s renewable electricity program provides a viable and seamless option for homes and businesses to reduce carbon emissions from their energy consumption. In 2023 our membership saved 6,442 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (co2e) – that’s over 14 million pounds of carbon emissions saved! We also partner with other entities to help our members learn about energy conservation, the importance of energy efficiency, and how to support renewable energy more broadly, all of which ultimately lead to additional carbon emissions savings whether direct or indirect. That’s real, quantifiable impact on carbon emissions made possible today by our dedicated membership.
In Pennsylvania, only 4% of electric generation comes from renewable sources, a meager 1% increase since 2010. In contrast, 21% of national electric generation is renewable.
Entrenched fossil fuel interests, regulatory complexities, and legislative gridlocks impact the opportunities available to Pennsylvania energy consumers: opportunities like reduced renewable energy costs, greater accessibility to renewable energy, and cleaner air. We are not seeing necessary movement in the public sphere to necessary to achieve long-term environmental sustainability.
In addition to growing our membership to replace fossil fuel consumption with renewable energy consumption, The Energy Co-op will continue to gain expertise on renewable energy opportunities for energy consumers and advocate for those opportunities to become more readily available and accessible in Pennsylvania. This means understanding energy technology, frameworks, and systems; understanding relevant legislation; and educating and mobilizing our constituency to support renewable energy transformation in Pennsylvania.
The energy co-op has served energy consumer needs for over 4 decades. The long-term need is a future brightened by renewable energy, and we believe it’s our responsibility to enable that future.
Access to reliable, clean energy should not be a privilege, it should be a right. But due to reliance on fossil fuel sources for electric generation in a market-based industry, renewable energy – while the least expensive to generate – is the most expensive for consumers to purchase. Add in legislative, regulatory, and administrative hurdles like the PJM interconnection freeze or lack of support for initiatives like RGGI or community solar, and the result is further decreased accessibility of renewable energy both from a cost and supply standpoint.
Disadvantaged communities are most negatively impacted by environmental crisis and have the most to gain from access to clean energy and more sustainable environmental practices. The energy cost burden on these communities is entrenched in every aspect of energy consumption from the energy itself to infrastructure required to support energy access and energy inefficiencies. And these communities are rarely prioritized as beneficiaries of progress in clean energy.
We have a responsibility to our membership to run an effective cooperative business, and we take that responsibility very seriously. Our mission is to be a leader of today’s sustainable energy evolution and we believe that also means we have a responsibility to energy consumers historically excluded from the benefits of clean energy progress.
Through our strategic activities, we aim to find funding opportunities to increase access to renewable energy in energy burdened communities. We will collaborate with community partners to educate community members on energy consumer rights and opportunities and mobilize community members to advocate for themselves and their energy needs. The goal is energy justice and a clean energy future for all Pennsylvanians.
Powering your home or business with clean electricity, renewable natural gas or home heating oil from The Energy Co-op is similar to purchasing energy from any number of competing suppliers.
But, we’re not like every other supplier. When you switch to The Energy Co-op, you become a Co-op member. That means you have a right to know (and vote on) how your energy is sourced and how the organization is run.
To most energy companies, this degree of transparency would be revolutionary. To us, it’s just how we do business. We invite you to read our bylaws and learn all about our organization.
